Frequently Asked Questions
About Making Tax Digital for Dentists
What is Making Tax Digital (MTD)?
MTD is HMRC’s move to quarterly digital reporting instead of one annual Self Assessment return. It applies to sole‑trader dental professionals and landlords once they pass the gross income threshold.
When does MTD start for dentists?
MTD begins 1 April 2026 for dentists earning over £50,000, expands to £30,000+ in 2027 and is expected to apply to £20,000+ from 2028.
Does MTD replace the annual tax return?
No. You will still file a Final Declaration each year.
Will I pay tax more often under MTD?
No. Reporting becomes quarterly, but payment dates remain unchanged.
What income counts toward the £50,000 threshold?
Included: gross dental self‑employment + gross rental income. Not included: PAYE, dividends, limited company income, partnership income.
Is it a problem if I pay ALL my income into my Mettle account?
Yes — mixing self‑employment, PAYE, rental and overseas income causes categorisation errors in MTD software. Best practice: keep Mettle for dental + rental only.
Should I use Xero or FreeAgent for MTD?
Xero is best for dentists with rental income (one submission per quarter). FreeAgent is free with certain banks but often requires two submissions (dental + rental).
Can I link Mettle to Xero?
Yes — Mettle has a direct feed into Xero.
How accurate do quarterly submissions need to be?
They are snapshots. Corrections can be made in later quarters or at year‑end.
What happens if I miss a quarterly submission?
HMRC uses a points system: 1 points per late return 4+ points = £200 penalty. Points expire after 24 months.
What devices/software can I use?
Xero and FreeAgent work on PC, Mac, iPhone, Android, and tablets.
What does SmallBiz Accounts actually do for me under MTD?
Software setup, bank feeds, quarterly submissions, year‑end tax work, HMRC support and unlimited help.
